Tradition of Phase-wise Development and Progress
The city of Pune, which was once the heart of the “Maratha” culture and the land where Maratha history was written, is where our community has flourished.
Historical Roots
Early Settlement: The history of Kutchi families in Pune is nearly 70–75 years old. In the year 1940–41, Kutchi brothers first entered the city and began settling here.
Pioneers: Early prominent families included those of Shri Panachand Ladha Savla, Shri Ratanshi Ladha Savla, and others from villages like Kundi, Punadi, and Ratnal. Initially, they engaged in the ready-made garment business.
Expansion: Following their success in garments, other families joined businesses in oil, gram flour (besan), and wholesale grain trade.
Growth: By 1965, under the leadership of Shri Kalyanji Ghelai Dedhia and Shri Hirji Dharod, the community began to organize formally.
Social Institutions and Groups
The community established several specialized wings to cater to different age groups and needs:
Shree Poona Kutchi Jain Mahila Mandal (Est. 1975): Formed to empower women. Led by its first president, Smt. Sushilaben Chunilal Dedhia, it organizes 8 to 10 programs annually focusing on social awareness, religious, and cultural activities.
Shree Poona Kutchi Jain Yuva Mandal: A dedicated wing for the youth to organize disciplined cultural, educational, and entertainment activities.
Senior Citizen Group: Formed for members over 55 years of age. They meet every 2–3 months for picnics, dinners, and gatherings to share joy and companionship.
Religious and Welfare Activities
Shree Achalgachha Jain Sangh: Handles various religious activities and manages spiritual programs throughout the year.
Legal Recognition: In 1980, the “Samaj” was officially registered as a legal entity.
Educational Support: The Samaj holds annual award ceremonies to honor students with high academic achievements. It also provides financial assistance for higher education and computer studies.
Medical Assistance:
- Manav Seva Sangh: A group of benevolent members who provide medical aid and treatment support to the needy.
- Health Insurance: The Samaj facilitates the “Sanjivani Health Scheme” (Group Mediclaim) through the Mumbai Samaj, helping members with policy premiums and medical emergencies.
- Social Welfare: Monthly distribution of free grains to needy families and providing medical help and medicines.
Infrastructure and Presence
Samaj Hall: Located in Shaniwar Peth, Pune, which serves as a hub for community activities.
Office: The “Pragati Aradhna Bhavan,” the office of the Shree Achalgachha Jain Sangh, is located nearby.
Temples: Adjacent to the office are the Shri Tejalakshmi Sambhavnath Derasar and the Matushri Maniben Khimji Veerji Upashray.
Conclusion and Demographics
As of 2026, the community population in Pune grew to 550 families. It is noted that after Mumbai, Pune has the second-largest concentration of this community.
We pray for continued unity, cooperation, and brotherhood among the members of the Poona Kutchi Jain Samaj, and that members always stand ready to help one another in times of need.
